Dude. That was it. Thanks a lot!
Well, now I can just use 2.0.3, but I'm still puzzled as to why
I can't swap in the 2.0.4 binary and use alsa.

Alsa is sane. config.log has an error about ladspa at the end but no
mention of alsa anywhere:
