Oops, that is indeed incorrect -- fixed in CVS and to the online version.
That text dates back to the first versions of Ecasound which had no
concept of interactive mode nor ECI. :) I guess in the very early versions
you could add to multiple chains, but is was removed quite early on.

True, also a very old example and definitely incorrect. I posted a fixed

Yes, adding inputs and outputs to multiple chains is the key mechanism
when routing audio from and to Ecasound chains.
