Has ecasound worked before this (previous versions of ALSA and/or
ecasound)?

How about ALSA's OSS-emulation, does "ecasound -i /dev/dsp -o foo.wav"
work?

How about -z:nointbuf?

How about 32bit operation (s32_le,2,44100)...? This should work with 24bit
devices.
