You should really take a look at jack! It can be found on Dave Phillips'
linux-sound-page:

There is a total category for jack. But the jack-server itself is the second
entry, I think.
Jack is a layer between alsa and you apps. You can interconnect apps and
connect apps to specific devices on your soundcard, if supported by alsa.
There is a list of apps supported by jack on the jack-page. Ecasound belongs
to that lot.
