I'm now using ecasound 2.0.4 with ecawave -cvs. I've tried most other
combinations and they all give errors of some kind.

This is what I got:

(eca-session) Interactive mode enabled.

Lots of SGI libaudiofile refs but I can't see any 'aiff' refs.

I placed this in /root(it couldn't understand
'/root/Desktop/snds/beneditimus.aiff') and got:

****************************************************************************
* ecasound v2.0.4 (C) 1997-2001 Kai Vehmanen *
****************************************************************************
- [ Chainsetup/Enabling audio inputs ] -------------------------------------
(audioio-af) Using audiofile library to open file "beneditimus.aiff" for
reading.
(eca-audio-objects) Audio object "beneditimus.aiff", mode "read".
(audio-io) Format: s16_le, channels 2, srate 44100, interleaved.
- [ Chainsetup/Enabling audio outputs ] ------------------------------------
(eca-audio-objects) Audio object "null", mode "read/write".
(audio-io) Format: s16_le, channels 2, srate 44100, interleaved.
- [ Engine/Init - mixmode "simple" ] ---------------------------------------
- [ Engine/Exiting ] -------------------------------------------------------

 however,...when I used ecawave (is ecawave v0.5dev1 actually 'ecawave-cvs'
or is this an error?) to load the file I get:

'can't open file "/root/beneditimus.aiff", unknown audio format'

Just to complicate matters when I use 'soxplay' I get 'white noise' when
trying to play beneditimus.aiff or beneditimus.wav (which are srate 44100)
Again,if I play any 11kHz 176kbps .wav file it's OK!

I use 'snd' and 'mhWaveEdit' as well and they playback 'beneditimus.aiff' or
beneditimus.wav perfectly. hmm...

Regards,
Keith
