That's probably it. RIFF .wav specs cover a huge variety of audio data
formats (check ecasound/libecasound/audioio-wave.h:85). Ecasound supports
only uncompressed PCM audio, and the ieee-float extension (also
uncompressed pcm).
You should be able to play the mp3-in-wav files using
"-i:typeselect,.mp3,foo.wav" (2.1dev1->).
