Sounds very much like a driver problem. Shame, I was thinking of getting the
very same card some time in the future. On the alsa-devel list there is some
talk about problems with DMA memory allocation. Paul Davies suggests loading
the driver as early as possible at boot time. If you are launching alsa with
the init script try changing the order in which the alsa script is called .
On my rh7.1 machine the script is designated S87 ie linked to
/etc/rc.d/rc5.d/S86alsasound. Edit the alsasound file stored in the
/etc/init.d (maybe in a different location on different distributions) and
change the line:

# chkconfig: 2345 87 14

To something like:

# chkconfig: 2345 07 14

Then if available update with:

 chkconfig --add alsasound

This launches alsasound before any other daemons on my machine.

Also you could try asking someone on the lad mailing list if they have a
working delta 44.
