Subject: [ecasound] No sound through OSS device

I apologise if this is a FAQ, but I couldn't find any mention of this
in the User's Manual, FAQ, or mailing list archives.
I've built and installed ecasound-2.0.1 (as well as ecawave-0.3dev7
and qtecasound-0.1dev5), and it works fine as long as I'm not trying
to write to my soundcard. When I set my output device to /dev/dsp, I
simply get no sound. However, I can successfully cat stdout to the
default 8-bit device:
ecasound -i sound.wav -f u8,1,8000 -o stdout > /dev/dsp
Because the RH 6.2 installation I originally installed on this laptop
didn't support my soundcard, I'm using a 4Front OSS driver
(v3.9.3p-000910). But other applications (such as sox) correctly
write 16-bit stereo data to /dev/dsp (e.g. using the "ossdsp"
pseudo-file type in sox).
Are there any particular issues with getting third-party OSS drivers
to work with ecasound? Any help is appreciated.
