I tried it with -z:db with the same effect. I also used /dev/dsp with no
change.

I am running by default in interactive mode. That's why it doesn't show up in
the command.
The delay is fractions of a second. From my reading of aio-setpos that may be
too small an interval of time. Mixing to file produces the same effect. I
think it is happening pre-mix for reasons I'll explain in my response to
Teppo.
