I have exactly the same situation. However, I'm not sure if the
problem really is ecasound related, because when I do

[teppo@mitch teppo]$ cat /usr/share/sounds/question.wav >/dev/snd/pcmC0D0c
cat: write error: Device not configured

So, maybe its a problem with ALSA. Sorry, no help.
