Have you tried the real OSS drivers?

Unfortunately there isn't much you can do on ecasound's side. If
"ecasound -i somefile.wav -o /dev/dsp" doesn't work, then there ain't
much you can do. Either your soundcard drivers or the hardware itself
is not working correctly. With more complex setups, ecasound can cause
problems, but it definitely should work with the above setup.

Few pointers:
        - what apps do work (especially non-ALSA apps)?
        - have you double-checked your irq and dma settings
          (and possibly tried different configurations)?
        - have you tried older ALSA drivers+
