I've now managed to reproduce this behaviour, but unfortunately I'm not
sure what's causing it. It seems that this problem is not specific to
ecasound. I tried to compile a few big packages written in C++, but with
no luck. When it comes to compile and link phases, the really important
packages are:

- glibc
- gcc
- libstdc++ (compiled either in gcc-tree or as a separate package)
- cpp ( -- " -- )
- binutils (contains ld, as, etc)

On my development machine, ecasound compiles fine. It has

- glibc 2.1.2
- egcs 1.1.2 (gcc 2.91.66)
- libstdc++ 2.9.0
- cpp 1.1.2
- binutils 2.9.1.0.23

... if you are have 'multiple definitions' problems, ecasound hangs
when adding chains, etc, etc, I'd like to hear what version of the
above packages are you using?
