summarizing the off-the-list bughunt: yes indeed there were regressions in
latest code that broke building on cygwin. Fortunately the problems were
minor and easily fixed. And those fixes are now in git and a snapshot is
available at:

The fixes have been tested with latest cygwin 1.7.2.
