Hello William!
   Ecassound has a few ways of using jack. You can use jack:
ecasound -i something -o jack
   Which will create the ports, but NOT connect.
   You can use jack_multi:
ecasound -i input -o jack_multi,system:playback_1,system:playback_2
   Connect to the first stereo output pair.
   And I believe jack_auto is still working:
ecasound -i input -o jack_auto,system
   Will automatically connect to the first few channels of the soundcard. The
number of channels is determined by the format of the file or if given by a -f
option.
