Besides damaging your speakers, hearing loss or heart attack? ;-)

If I'm not wrong -ea:25600 is +24dB. With pop music or radio you get
heavy digital clipping, which doesn't sound very nice. Alternatively
if there is enough headroom in your audio chain (depending on the
platform, audio mixer and volume contol) it is just getting very loud.
Better to avoid it, but most of the times you will instantly turn the
volume down without any harm done.

I feel the s24_le_msb_padded should be really avoided between
applications and as a file format. I don't think ecasound should
support it at all. MPD should support native 24bit integer or 32bit
float (and maybe 32bit integer, but I see no point in that). 24bit
encoded as 32bit int with most significant bits zero padded is a
format for sound devices, not anything the user should care about. Is
there any documentation for MPD's pipe interface?
