Check that you don't have any other sound apps running:
ps xa |grep artsd
ps xa |grep esd
'artsd' is the KDE sound daemon, while 'esd' is for GNOME. Kill those
and try again (killall artsd, or from the KDE/GNOME menus).
Also, try the following:
ecasound -i foo.wav -o alsa
... that might fix the problem in case ALSA's OSS-emulation is not
correctly setup on your machine.
