Hmm, ok, if you (or anyone else) has the chance to test whether these
work ok with ecasound, let me know.

In which directory do you get the error (in readline-4.0 or some other)?
Seems strange as ecasound/readline-4.0 has a null check target. Did you
first run plain "make"...?
