Subject: Network streaming with JACK
Some interesting discussion over at ecasound-list overlaps with
something I've started to implement with JACK: a client called
JACKnet which aims to provide inter-host JACK port connection
and audio streaming via RTP.
Basically, one of these would be
started on each JACK host that wants to participate, which then broadcasts
its existence (and its available jack ports) to other jacknets on the
local ethernet network (this is optional, you could specify a
specific host if necessary). A local JACKnet client would then
make local proxy ports for every remote port it found. Upon connection
to one of these ports (on both ends), RTP data would begin to
flow for it.
I recently started the implementation, and have not yet reached
the stage of network data flow, or tested what are realistic bandwidth/latency
tradeoffs. There will be some latency added of course, but for
most applications, this should be acceptable.
Any thoughts or comments from others as I proceed will be gratefully
accepted.
