Hmm, how does it fail? I just tried a few different setups and all worked
fine. I ran the tests in a screen session. For instance:

ecasound -i foo.wav -o null -ev &
[ you get prompt back, ecasound runs in background ]
...
[ after ecasound finishes, it prints the volume stats
  to the console ]
