This issue is now (finally) fixed in ecasound's CVS-tree (2.1devX series).
Ecasignalview was basicly rewritten. It's now much more robust (no more
segfaults), less resource-hungry and the user-interface is now a _lot_
nicer.

Instead of raw numbers, ecasignalview now draws the vu-meters using
ascii graphics. The old "-ev screen" is still printed when ecasignalview
is stopped, but it's not continuously updated anymore (this was way too
expensive for a simple text tool).
