To my knowledge, it should not affect normal kernel behaviour even though you have the ALSA modules installed. You compile them, install to your /lib/modules/(kernel-version)/ . And then you ask to load them separately. (normally using a script in /etc/rc.d/rc(your-runlevel).d/)
