Subject: [ecasound] Ecasound compiling problem

First, let me apologize for an absolutely newbie questions.
Both
(A) attempt to compile Ecasound
(B) attempt to install Ecasound from Redhat 6.x i386 type rpm package and
use it
failed because of missing ALSA drivers.
As I have then looked up for ALSA drivers in the Internet, I noticed that
it (if installed) affects kernel modules. I am now using RedHat Linux 7.3
with an 2.4.18 kernel (which might be even somewhat patched by RedHat
Inc.)
How do I install ALSA drivers so that I won't in any case end up with an
unusable kernel corrupted by bad module dependencies? My former
experiments with kernel compilation and use of such kernels have not
always been absolutely successful, that's why I am worried of "touching"
the now quite-well-functioning kernel.
Thanks,
Mikko Nummelin
