Indeed a good question. And as it happens, this is covered by edi-18:

(edi-18): Intelligent system for setting the internal sample rate.
        - submitted: smassy, 17.10.2001
        - done: kaiv, 31.01.2002

... which is implemented in CVS. This makes -sr obsolete.
