[ecasound] dumb newbie question

when i do
ecasound -a:mon -i:track0.wav -o:/dev/dsp -a:rec -i:/dev/dsp -o:track1.wav

track1.wav ends up containing both audio from track0 and what i recorded.
this isn't right is it?
is this a driver issue?
