This compiler that comes with RH7.x, 2.96, just _sucks_! Fortunately RH7.x
comes with two compilers. You should try to use the older one:

CXX=kgcc ./configure
make
make install

... some people have managed to compile ecasound with 2.96, but if it
doesn't work... you're in trouble. The kgcc (alias gcc 2.91.66, alias egcs
1.1.2 is tested to compile ecasound 2.x).
