Wow, first I hadn't noticed it had been opened in mono, I had simply cut & pasted the command, but YES, it worked, is that a bug in ALSA's OSS emulation? Cos AFAIK it's NOT supposed to work!

Well, I've never had any trouble with panning myself; this idea could make it nicer still...
