After reading the actual issue :)

I don't think ecasound will convert to float in any case. 32bit float is
the default but I guess if you specify 24bit int it will just use that.

If you record through jack, then the signal will be 32bit float before
it even reaches ecasound, but using alsa directly might allow to record
to int without intermediate conversion. I'm just guessing :)
