I've noticed the same effect, but couldn't find a FAQ entry or mailing list
post discussing it.
Note that it isn't hardware-related: I have two sound cards and it occurs
identically on both.
I read an article somewhere which stated that this was due to the transition
from silence to sound near the beginning of the file and its effect upon d/a
conversion. An explanation and a solution would be welcome.
