oops, sorry, i had searched the mailing list archives before posting
without finding anything relevant, but didn't think to check the BUGS
file.

i'm going to take at look at the MIDI engine code, but with the
required changes being, as you say, non-trivial, i am assuming some
substantial rewriting is needed. in any case, i would be happy to help
test anyone else's patches for this.
