I hit this exact same error. Ecasound will not compile with
libsndfile 1.0.4, but 1.0.5 works.

There is no configure check for the library version, it just tests the
existence of main in libsndfile...

  AC_CHECK_LIB(sndfile,main,sndfile_support=yes,sndfile_support=no)
