well we're making steps, but we're not yet there .. *grin* this time I
just clicked that li'l button which makes the pane disappear .. this was
enough to stop ecasound playing .. this time, though I didn't see the
already familiar
(audioio-alsa) Write error! Stopping operation (-5).

but instead the following, rather short information:
ecasound ('h' for help)> (eca-engine) Prefilling i/o buffers.

ecasound ('h' for help)> -4).

(the "prefilling i/o buffers" is of course from when I started playback)
...

trying to restart playback afterwards still yields the same result:
ecasound ('h' for help)> t
- [ Controller/Processing started ] ----------------------------------------
Warning: DBC_REQUIRE failed - "is_running() != true", eca-engine.cpp, 596.
