Subject: changing cop-parameters

Hello all!
  I have a question. If I want to change a parameter of a cop, do I need to
disconnect the chain temporarily (or does the engine need to do it)?
  I wanna do a realtime recording and then start an effect, stop it and maybe
restart it again later. Is this possible without a connected midi-controller?
If it's possible, how?
