In general, gcc-2.96 is considered as a development version, and is not
supported by gcc:s original maintainers and authors. It is RedHat:s
own version, not anymore used by them, even. gcc-2.95.3 is considered as
most stabile of gcc-releases, although nowadays the gcc 3.x series is
perhaps taking over it.
