I can't help you with a specific answer to this question but I have written
a php module to interface to the Ecasound ECI, using this would stop this
particular problem.

You can get it from either

or http://pear.php.net/package-info.php?pacid=120
hint: downloading from pear helps my stats :) but you would still need to
visit websise for the docs.
