Subject: [ecasound] cvs not compiling for me

After having a disc crash and reinstalling RH7.2, I decided to forgo
installing alsa since my sound card seems to run OK with OSS/free. I got
the cvs verson of ecasound and it compiled fine for me. This morning I
updated my cvs and tried to compile with the follown configure:

--------------------------------------------------
./configure --disable-alsa
--with-python-includes=/usr/local/include/python2.2
--with-python-modules=/usr/local/lib/python2.2/site-packages/
--------------------------------------------------

with the result:

--------------------------------------------------
c++ -DHAVE_CONFIG_H -I. -I. -I../.. -I. -I../.. -I../../libecasound
-I../../kvutils -I/usr/include/kde/artsc -O2 -D_REENTRANT -DNDEBUG
-ffast-math -fstrict-aliasing -funroll-loops -DENABLE_DBC
-Wp,-MD,.deps/audioio_alsa.pp -c audioio_alsa.cpp -fPIC -DPIC -o
.libs/audioio_alsa.lo
audioio_alsa.cpp:27:28: alsa/asoundlib.h: No such file or directory
In file included from audioio_alsa.cpp:36:

--------------------------------------------------

Have I got something wrong, or does ecasound require alsa at this point. I
see that jack does require alsa and the development of ecasound seems to
be moving toward using jackd.

Philosophically (and technically) speaking, are there real advantages for
me to install alsa (other than the above) when OSS/free works for me? I
have noted that several music packages (timidity for one) don't compile
without unofficial patches using alsa 9.x which is why I didn't want to
install it.

Bill
