Thanks shane(?) but I have come up against another barrier. Using alsa-driver-0.9.0beta4 the oss emulation will work with multiple instances of ecasound running but it sounds really bad (scratchy) and using the alsa driver -o:alsahw,0,0 I can only get one instance of ecasound running at a time. However there is no scratchiness to the sound.
Neither of these are what I'm needing so I'm am going to look into writing a native extension to aplay. Maybe I'll call it loop. Saves on typing too. I just ran a test and I could use aplay without any trouble in ten terminals at the same time. I just seem to be held back by screen space.
I'll let you know how I get on.
Patrick.
