ecasound -i null -o /dev/dsp -el:sine_fcac,440,1

... results in 440Hz tone (sine). I use this all the time for tuning my
guitars. This is a good example of what LADSPA plugins are capable of. The
above example uses the sine-osc plugin that comes with LADSPA SDK.
