This seems to be a common problem. What version of mpg123
are you using? One thing to try is "-m:simple" and "-m:normal"
options (not for ecatools_play).

My mpg123 (0.59q) dumps core if I try to use it directly, but
when ecasound uses it, everything works fine. ;)
